The webinar will provide will provide a brief overview of the key content of the Handbook including characteristics of the crossing environment and users and physical and operational changes that can be made at crossings to enhance the safety and operation of both highway and rail traffic. The following Handbook chapters will be discussed: Introduction & Glossary; Engineered Treatments; Treatment Selection Guidance; Project Implementation; Maintenance, Management, & Operations; and Special Topics. The Webinar will also include a synopsis of the ITE Recommended Practice Preemption of Traffic Signals Near Railroad Crossings that is currently under development and has been incorporated in part into the Handbook.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the structure and content of the newly released Highway-Rail Crossing Handbook, 3rd Edition with an emphasis on key content updates
  • Summarize a range of current practices for implementing safety engineering treatments for at-grade highway-rail crossings
  • Describe current issues and technological advances proposed for inclusion in ITE’s proposed recommended practice Preemption of Traffic Signals Near Railroad Crossings
  • Identify additional highway-rail grade crossing design resources, standards, guides and technical tools to improve safety and operation of highway rail-grade crossings
