Introduction
This course introduces students to estimating civil engineering, heavy construction projects, and site work construction projects. This course will cover reading and understanding civil construction plans, determining earthwork quantities, determining crew make-up, and fundamentals of estimating various civil and site work components.

Prerequisites
To do well in this course you should have the following skills:

  • Familiarity with blueprints
  • Have a basic knowledge of construction estimating subjects including:
  • Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
  • Be familiar with the use of a calculator
  • Be able to organize your work so it can easily be understood by others

Learning Objectives
By the end of this class you should be able to:
  1. Understand and use standard terminology used in civil construction
  2. Organize an estimate in a logical format
  3. Perform quantity take-offs for civil construction work
  4. Determine crew make up and productivity
  5. Calculate labor, equipment, and material costs for civil construction works
  6. Prepare a final estimate for a civil/site work construction project including indirect costs, mark-ups, and profit.

Class Organization
The following table lists the learning modules, the maximum value in points a student can receive within each module, and the time in which the modules must be finished.

It is important that the student keep up with the class and not fall behind. Course modules will be made available to students on Saturday of each week. Class work must be completed by the following Saturday. Students will not be able to work ahead of the class although reading assignments will be made available in advance. Actual dates that modules will become available will be posted in advance on the course calendar.

Student Learning Assessment
Graded assignments will consist of one quiz for each module and participation in two class discussions. Each quiz will count 10 points and class discussions will count 15 points. You can take quizzes twice and use the highest score achieved as your final quiz grade.

Class discussions are a very important part of this course. Students learn more and learn better when they discuss the topic at hand. For that reason, the instructor considers the regular weekly discussions to be even more important than the weekly quizzes.

Grades will be posted on a weekly basis. You will have full access to your grade sheet so you will be able to keep track of how you are doing at all times.
