She graduated from University of Louisville with a Master Degree in Biochemistry and joined the department of Pharmaceutical Research and Development in 2001. Li is responsible for developing predictive in vitro methodology and designing stability studies for over 20 Merck development candidates ranging from pre-clinical to Phase III. She currently is leading the analytical effort at Merck to develop an enhanced understanding of polymer structure-performance relationship for oral and parenteral delivery of a range of development candidates with diverse physical and chemical properties. Shawn S.A. Zhang, DigiM Solution LLC Shawn Zhang is founder and managing partner of DigiM Solution LLC. Shawn graduated from Rutgers University with a Ph.D. in Computational Physics and a minor in Computer Engineering. Before starting Boston-based DigiM, Shawn held senior positions at Fluent, Ansys, and FEI, and played instrumental roles in software design, development and management of sales and application teams. Shawn and his team developed commercially successful CFD (computational fluid dynamics) software Fluent, image processing software Avizo, and 3D visualization software Open Inventor. Shawn is passionate about the combined power of imaging and numerical simulation, and leads DigiM to becoming the pioneer in microstructure physics, characterization and design for drug and drug delivery system applications, with over a hundred publications. Gerard Byrne, Merck Research Laboratories Gerard Byrne is currently Principal Scientist and Leader of the Early Development Centre in Pharmaceutical Sciences & Clinical Supply in Merck Research Laboratories. Gerard received a Master’s Degree in Pharmacy (Queen’s University, Belfast, UK) and subsequently completed his professional qualification with AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood and University Hospitals Leicester. Following this, Gerard completed a PhD at the University of Nottingham working within the areas of drug delivery, applied optics and molecular sciences to develop label-free microscopy platforms for determining nanoparticle endocytosis mechanisms.Gerard began his career at MSD (Hodesdon, UK) in 2009 as a formulation scientist. He has worked on a variety of early and mid-stage oral small molecule CR/IR development projects. Gerard is a subject matter expert in controlled release and has authored / co-authored over 30 publications / posters. Zhen Liu, Merck and Co., Inc Zhen Liu is an associate principal scientist in Pharmaceutical Science and Clinical Supply of Merck & Co., Inc. Zhen graduated from Columbia University with a Ph.D. in the major of Chemical Engineering. After graduation, Zhen joined PSCS of Merck at West Point, PA focusing on methodology development using concepts from solid state characterization and material science to investigate phase behavior of drug molecules in solid dosage formulations.
