Using Aquatic Interventions for Functional Improvements in the Older Adult Client

No Ratings

Course Description:

When considering functional training for a wide spectrum of older adults, aquatic therapy and exercise are often relegated to a secondary role. In part, because of the lack of literature addressing this topic, as well as the fact that humans live on land, water therapies have been considered to have limited benefits in maintaining or improving functional skills.

This webinar will define specific functional activities that are within the repertoire of the modern-day older adult. Using objective measures to quantify improvement, this webinar will demonstrate progressions for each skill set. A discussion of current literature on aquatic interventions to upgrade land function will conclude the presentation.

Course Objectives & Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify key components of physical decline in community-dwelling older adults that negatively impact function;
  • Describe appropriate standardized testing to quantify specific areas of physical decline for which physical therapy intervention is most appropriate;
  • Explain the benefits of aquatic interventions relative to the physical decline that can occur with age;
  • Identify accurate aquatic progressions that promote positive functional changes in the older adult population; and
  • Discuss when it is appropriate to transition from water to land to facilitate efficient physical upgrades that affect daily function.

Instructor: Marty Biondi, PT, DPT, CSCS
Over the past 40+ years, Marty has been involved in various aspects of aquatics, including pool management and aquatic therapy, and has always been an avid swimmer. Currently, Marty works as a Partner and Director of Physical Therapy at an outpatient clinic and personal training practice. Being passionate about aquatics, she is involved in patient care, small group classes, and research that promotes functional gains using aquatic interventions.
