  • The learner will be able to identify those individuals with paralysis who may benefit pool therapy, and those who are not appropriate to take in the pool;
  • The learner will identify the roles and benefits of an interdisciplinary team aquatics approach; and
  • The learner will be able to integrate aquatic principles/theory, relative research, and techniques when designing an aquatic physical therapy session with a patient.

Instructor:
Brian J. Maloney PT, DPT, is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Georgia. He received his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Emory University in 2011. Dr. Maloney is a Board-Certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist, and continues to practice clinically in neurological rehabilitation one day per week.

Brian is active in community service and advocacy for the PT profession. He volunteers with the academy of aquatic physical therapy, APTA Georgia, Life Rolls on Foundation, and the University of North Georgia’s Student-led pro-bono clinic.

He has presented at CSM on Aquatics and has completed the Academy of Aquatic Physical Therapy’s Clinical Competency Certificate program.

Statement of Relevance to Physical Therapy
This course instructs physical therapists in how to determine if a person with SCI is appropriate for aquatic therapy. It then discusses appropriate interventions including supporting scholarly research for those interventions. Lastly it discusses how physical therapists can collaborate with other disciplines to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
