Description

Successful Second Chances: How Chambers Can Support Re-Entry Recruitment and Retention
Learn how the Tennessee Department of Labor and employer partners are working to shift the narrative on and create successful Second Chance workforces. The Smart Justice Roundtable will welcome representatives from the Tennessee Department of Labor’s Re-Entry Division to share how they are working with system impacted clients and business partners to create clearer pathways to workforce re-entry. Hear about how business partners in Tennessee are stepping up and taking a direct approach to influence and create more inclusive laborforces, while working with the public sector system on ways to remove barriers to employment. Our guests will share best practices and discuss how Chambers can take a larger role in influencing, supporting and building successful Second Chance laborforces through more collaborative recruitment and retention practices.

Speakers:

  • William Arnold, Director of ReEntry, Tennessee State Department of Labor
  • J. Paul Jackson, Thor Boats, Tennessee Labor Board

Contributors

  • William E. Arnold

William E. Arnold, Jr., Ed. D., has 20+ years of experience in higher education and community engagement, particularly in the areas of DEI. In 2013, he was wrongfully convicted of crimes that he did not commit. His conviction was overturned by an Appellate Court in 2020 and he was the first person to receive relief from the Davidson County Conviction Review Unit.

Today, Dr. Arnold uses his professional training and recent life experiences to create a platform that views diversity as a viable way for returning citizens/justice involved individuals to restore dignity, decrease recidivism and add value to the workforce. He has lead discussions at universities and state agencies on the growing need for criminal justice reform, personal risk management and broader, more substantive reentry efforts. These talks have led him to have DEI conversations with See Change Institute, Tennessee State University, University of Cincinnati, the Tennessee Innocence Project and Vanderbilt University. A servant leader and Ted Talk Alum, Dr. Arnold is the current Director of the Office of Reentry at the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. This office stands as the first state funded, comprehensive, non-Department of Corrections related office of reentry in the nation.
