Course Description
Most midwives and other clinicians do not have time or expertise in assessment and treatment of postpartum pelvic discomfort or dysfunction. This webinar will address causes of postpartum vulvovaginal and pelvic pain, and introduce quick assessment methods for incontinence, pain, tissue atrophy, prolapse, and dyspareunia related to or exacerbated by childbirth. Kegel exercises are NOT the right solution for everyone or everything! Sometimes they make a situation worse. Knowing what conditions should be addressed in ongoing pelvic floor physical therapy and when to refer to should be a core competency of midwifery care.
Learning Objectives
1. Participants will describe 3 signs or symptoms of postpartum atrophic vulvo-vaginal tissue changes.
2. Participants will distinguish between stress, urge, and mixed urinary incontinence.
3. Participants will describe at least one method for evaluating pelvic organ prolapse.
4. Participants will identify the 3 layers of the pelvic floor and cite one characteristic of each.
