Speaker Bio
Dr. Dowdy has practiced midwifery for 41 years, and sonography for 21 years. Although retired from clinical teaching in the Midwifery and WHNP Programs at Vanderbilt University, and Baby & Company in Nashville, she still provides lectures and educational seminars. Her DNP project was the development of an educational program for teens with PCOS. She has published on this topic, as well as presented at numerous conferences. She has taught and precepted midwifery and NP students for many years. She now teaches an ACNM-accredited point-of-care ultrasound for midwives and NPs in Nashville, TN. She received AANP’s Nurse Practitioner Advocate State Award for Excellence in 2014. As a registered sonographer and midwife, she collaborated with the ACNM Ultrasound Education Task Force and Inteleos/ARDMS in developing the Midwifery Ultrasound Exam, currently serving as Vice Chair of the oversight committee. Other ventures include women’s health projects in developing countries. She has provided short term OB/GYN and ultrasound services in the following countries: Grenada, Uganda, Tanzania, Mexico, and Dominican Republic. She is currently the co-manager of the Grenada Nursing project with RAD-AID, International. She has recently developed an international curriculum for midwives and skilled birth attendants for use in low- and middle-income countries, which will be piloted in Grenada in Fall of 2021 by Inteleos and RAD-AID. She was honored among Nurses with Global Impact by the 2021 United Nations NWGI Program at a formal ceremony in May 2021.
