Mind the Gap: Intergenerational Differences

Motivation and communication are essential for the development of relationships, whether that be the patient: physician, learner: educator, or leader: worker relationship. Generational differences in communication and motivation come from specialized characteristics developed during an individual's early life from events both within and outside of their control. This discussion will focus on the main areas of motivation, the understanding of the characteristics that make up each generation, and the general characteristics of those generations. It will also discuss key ways to improve patient communication and leadership skills.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore motivational forces that push/pull individuals to accomplish their goals.
  • Describe the communication and motivational tendencies of each generation.
  • Investigate how to build a strong intergenerational workforce.
  • Evaluate how generational differences affect the patient/doctor relationship
