Military Psychological Impacts

This session will focus on the recognition that it may not always be obvious that a patient under care is a veteran and that there is no "one size fits all" profile of veteran mental health needs. Participants will learn how to appropriately and sensitively screen for veteran-specific mental health needs. This will be followed by a discussion about the help that can be provided within the primary care setting including prescribing advice for such in-house assistance. The session will close by a discussion of resources to consider when outside referral is appropriate.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize that veterans have varying demographic profiles and that there is no "one size fits all" profile of a veteran.
  • Ask appropriate screening questions to assess the presence of mental health needs of veteran patients.
  • Distinguish between mental health needs that can be addressed in the primary care setting and those that call for referral elsewhere.
  • Give appropriate advice regarding resources available for addressing veteran mental health needs.
