Making Comprehensive Competency Based Assessments DOable

.75 AOA Category 1-A Credits or AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™

Monica Newton, DO, MPH, FAAFP
Leslie David, MD

In this general session, we will discuss the need for a longitudinal plan for assessment of competency and how direct observation is a key part of that. Through a very practical how-to presentation, participants will walk away with a systematic approach for carrying it out evaluation in a FM residency. The steps involve include devising a plan to assess each of the competencies in their appropriate settings with co-creation of content if possible, creating a sharing mental model within the faculty of what you want to see the resident perform, and formative way of sharing the feedback that is frequent enough to achieve mastery. The presenters will discuss the basics in step-by-step fashion of creation of an assessment roadmap, evaluation creation, and a shared mental for agenda setting (one of our key skills) as an example of what we would like to observe the residents perform with competence through direct observation. Utilizing audience polling, we will discuss barriers to implementation and key strategies for overcoming these to begin more meaningful assessments. Finally, we will share early implementation feedback from resident physicians and faculty who have implemented. Participants will walk away with roadmap for implementation, tools to do direct observation, and the skill of building a shared mental model that they can bring back to their programs.

Learning objectives:
1. Understand the Principles of competency-based assessment particularly the importance of Direct Observation (DO)
2. Enhance faculty comfort in making assessments
3. Make the evaluation and tracking process Doable
