Course Description
Participants will discuss ACOG and Medical Eligibility Criteria recommendations for immediate postpartum (IPP) long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and breastfeeding, as well as the most up-to-date research in the field on breastfeeding and postpartum contraception. This session will provide background information on all methods available for postpartum contraception and key strategies for patient-centered contraceptive counseling. Participants will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions through a Q&A session at the end of the webinar.
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Understand the need for postpartum contraception
- Describe postpartum contraceptive methods currently available
- Describe ACOG and CDC recommendations for postpartum contraception, including IPP LARC
- Discuss current research available on IPP LARC and breastfeeding
- Understand key elements of using shared medical decision making during postpartum contraceptive counseling
Maria Rodriguez, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Medical Director for the state of Oregon’s Title X program. She completed medical school and residency at OHSU (2004, 2008), and a fellowship in family planning at UCSF. As part of her fellowship, she completed a Master’s in Public Health at UC Berkeley (2010). Following her fellowship, she spent five years working for the Department of Reproductive Health and Research at the World Health Organization is in Geneva, Switzerland. While at the World Health Organization, she led the development of the guidelines “Ensuring human rights in the provision of contraceptive information and services” and contributed to the development and implementation of the Medical Eligibility Criteria and Safe Abortion guidelines.
Dr. Rodriguez’s research focuses on the intersection of medicine, policy and economics. She is specifically interested in generating information to help guide evidence based reproductive health policy both domestically and internationally. Maria is currently looking at the impact of health care reform in Oregon on family planning services, including an evaluation of direct provision of hormonal contraception by pharmacists.
