The Role of Nursing in Immediate Postpartum LARC Implementation

Course Description
Nurses play a critical role in successful implementation of immediate postpartum (IPP) long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). Taught by an IPP LARC clinical expert, this training session for nurses will highlight and explain the role of nurses in providing IPP LARC. Participants will learn about research and clinical guidance on IPP LARC, potential barriers to IPP LARC provision, and recommendations for patient-centered contraceptive counseling. Participants will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions through a Q&A session at the end of the webinar.

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe the importance of offering the full range of contraceptive methods postpartum, including LARC
  2. Describe the efficacy, safety, and advantages of IPP LARC
  3. Review immediate post-placental IUD insertion techniques
  4. Describe the importance of and identify resources for shared medical decision making during contraceptive counseling
  5. Explain operational barriers to IPP LARC provision
  6. Explain the role of nurses in IPP LARC provision and identify resources for support

Laura MacIsaac, MD, MPH, FACOG is Co-Director of the Fellowship in Family Planning of the Mount Sinai Health System and was the Residency Program Director for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for 9 years at Mount Sinai Beth Israel until it became a system-wide residency program. She is Associate Professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in both the Department Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health and the Department of Medical Education.

Dr. MacIsaac received her undergraduate degree from Barnard College of Columbia University and her medical degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and fellowship in Family Planning and Reproductive Science at the University of California, San Francisco. With the support of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Women’s Health Policy Award, she received an MPH in Health Policy and Management from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.

Dr. MacIsaac has created and led family planning training programs in several academic medical centers in New York City. She was the first recipient of the Ryan Residency Training Grant for Family Planning and has won national as well as medical school teaching awards. She directed the Reproductive Options Initiative for the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) and served as Chief Medical Officer of FEI Women’s Health. She served on the expert working group at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to create U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use in 2010 and the U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive use in 2013. She participates in national and regional work for ACOG, serving on the Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) Committee at both the national and district levels, serving as Scientific Co-Chair of the Annual Clinical Meeting for ACOG District II and is currently Chair for section 1 (Manhattan) for ACOG District II (New York State).
