Women's Heart Health

Objectives

This eModule, Women's Heart Health, explores Components of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), gender differences, epidemiology, demographics, and morbidity and mortality rates. A review of risk factors is presented as well as discussion regarding why CVD is unique to women and the leading killer of women in the United States and many other countries. Also discussed are symptoms of CVD in women, risk assessment, hypertension across a women’s lifespan, diagnosis, management, medications, and hormone replacement therapy.

By the end of this unit, you should be able to successfully do the following:

  • Make recommendations to improve cardiovascular health in patients
  • Describe the epidemiology and demographics of heart disease in women
  • Assess and discuss risk factors, including gender differences, that influence cardiovascular disease (CVD) development
  • Recognize symptoms of acute heart disease in women
