Gynecologic Bleeding Disorders

Objectives

The Gynecologic Bleeding Disorders eModule was developed by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The eModule lists the principal causes of abnormal uterine bleeding and the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) classification system. The material describes how to perform initial laboratory and diagnostic tests to evaluate and determine the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the principal causes of abnormal uterine bleeding and the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) classification system
  • Elicit a pertinent medical history to evaluate abnormal uterine bleeding
  • List the essential elements of a focused physical examination to investigate the etiology of abnormal uterine bleeding
  • List and interpret initial laboratory and diagnostic tests to evaluate heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Interpret the results of selected diagnostic tests to determine the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Identify treatments of abnormal uterine bleeding using nonsurgical and surgical methods
  • Describe the psychosocial impact of abnormal uterine bleeding and effective interventions
  • Recommend appropriate follow-up that is necessary for a patient with abnormal uterine bleeding
