Objectives

Prepregnancy Carrier Screening reviews the history, purpose, and timing of carrier screening. Current guidelines and recommendations by ACOG and other organizations are explained, and the unit discusses the difference between ethnicity-based versus expanded carrier screening.

By the end of this unit, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the history of ethnicity-based carrier screening
  • List current recommendations for prepregnancy screening
  • Evaluate the option of expanded carrier screening
