Cardiovascular disease affects 1-4% of pregnant women annually and is the leading cause of death in pregnant and postpartum women in the United States.  This module reviews the physiology of normal pregnancy, the signs and symptoms of heart disease, and the management of cardiovascular risk during and after pregnancy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the physiology of normal pregnancy and recognize signs and symptoms of heart disease
  • Assess risk of congenital heart disease and acquired heart disease
  • Discuss management in congenital heart disease and acquired heart disease, including peripartum cardiomyopathy
  • Recognize the association of adverse pregnancy outcomes on future long-term cardiovascular risk

How to Earn Credit

Participants who wish to earn AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM must complete all sections of the course including the evaluation. The passing score for the assessment is 80%, with the option to retake.
