ACP Prosthodontic Webinar: Temporomandibular Disorders, A Framework for Understanding

This presentation seeks to present a simplified framework for understanding disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), based on anatomical structures. The presentation will introduce the constituent anatomical components that make up the joint, along with the salient features of each category. A summary of the normal functioning of the joint will then be discussed, which provides the basis for understanding the ways in which it can become dysfunctional. The presentation demonstrates how a simplified anatomical categorization still incorporates the disorders in the classification system proposed by the American Academy of Oral Medicine but simplifies the understanding to facilitate timely referral and easier identification of dysfunctional physiology.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees should be able to:

  • Demonstrate familiarity with the anatomical components of the TMJ.
  • Identify how software and 3D printers interact for calibration.
  • Predict how anatomical anomalies give rise to dysfunction within the TMJ.
