Description
People with intellectual disabilities (ID) are capable of living active, healthy and productive lives. However, disparities in inclusive fitness opportunities may hinder a person’s capacity to achieve their full potential. Fitness professionals possess the skills set to deliver fitness programming to people with ID, but may lack the confidence to work with special populations. Through this session, professionals will gain confidence in applying their knowledge and skills to provide safe and impactful fitness programming for people with ID. Participants will receive training and resources so they can engage with people with ID in a variety of fitness-related roles.
Learning Objectives
1. Understand the health disparities experienced by people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and the factors that contribute to the gaps.
2. Gain knowledge, skills and confidence for meeting the needs of people with ID in fitness programming, including assessment.
3. Explore Special Olympics inclusive fitness resources.
