The promotion and tenure track in academic dentistry can appear nebulous and difficult to navigate. Many faculty members are familiar with traditional avenues to grow in their careers, such as focusing on establishing themselves as an expert in a particular field or discipline, conducting research, publishing scholarship, teaching and giving back to the community. However, the role of academic leadership is often overlooked.

  • Lisa D. Cain, Ph.D.

    Dr. Cain is the Associate Dean for Professional Development and Faculty Affairs and Professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. Her involvement in education has spanned over 30 years. Her history of leadership spans faculty affairs and faculty development at the regional, national and international levels. Dr. Cain is Co-chair of the ADEA Women in Leadership Special Interest Group and currently holds an elected position in the American Association of Medical Colleges’ Group on Faculty Affairs (GFA). Previously, she served as Chair of the 2019 GFA/GWIMS Professional Development Conference on behalf of GFA. She is the founder of the Texas Consortium for Faculty Success, which consists of 13 Texas Health Science Institutions and 18 faculty affairs administrators. She is a certified Executive Leadership Coach and an outcome-driven leader focused on strategic planning, behavioral analysis, effective communication and networking to achieve desired results.
