Please join ADEA for the dedication and launch of the ADEA Faculty Diversity Toolkit (ADEA FDT)—a comprehensive resource designed to help dental education and the health professions increase and support the recruitment and retention of historically underrepresented and marginalized faculty—during a virtual webinar on Monday, June 22, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern. The ADEA Faculty Diversity Toolkit is dedicated to Dr. Jeanne Sinkford and Dr. Leo Rouse, leaders and luminaries in dental education.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize why faculty diversity is important to dental education;
  2. Review key sections of the ADEA Faculty Diversity Toolkit related to challenges and best practices associated with recruiting and retaining historically underrepresented and marginalized faculty;
  3. Identify ways to utilize the ADEA Faculty Toolkit and Facilitator’s Guide to assess policies and practices to improve diverse faculty.

About the ADEA Faculty Diversity Toolkit
To assist its members with answering the call for improved faculty diversity, ADEA worked with 41 of its members from U.S. and Canadian dental schools and allied dental programs to develop the ADEA Faculty Diversity Toolkit (ADEA FDT). ADEA FDT is a landmark evidence-based resource designed to assist dental education with the design and implementation of faculty recruitment and retention initiatives that can be tailored to their unique needs. It is a living document, accessible online, and will be updated periodically.

The ADEA FDT begins by discussing the advantages of a diverse faculty, including research that supports the need for a diverse faculty and the resultant positive impact on student outcomes. It goes on to provide guidance on assessing the current campus climate, establishing pipelines for dental and allied dental students to become dental faculty, and outlines strategies for forming effective search committees and modifying the interview and hiring processes. Acknowledging the difficulties of keeping diverse faculty on campus, the ADEA FDT also shares best practices for retaining diverse individuals for the long term.

The ADEA FDT is a seminal resource for diverse faculty recruitment and retention and a monumental step for dental education and the profession as a whole. It aspires to not only help ADEA members and member institutions create and maintain humanistic and inclusive environments on their campuses by creating more diverse communities, but to also serve as a model for other health professions. The ADEA FDT Facilitator’s Guide is also available to assist campuses in assessing policies and practices and developing workshops, webinars, and faculty recruitment and retention plans.
