Designing and Delivering a Virtual Preclinical Endodontics Module

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the D1 preclinical curriculum at Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine (WU CDM) was unexpectedly interrupted by “stay-at-home” orders. Faculty needed to act fast because an endodontic module, consisting of five simulation technique labs, was scheduled to begin the following week and students were required to continue their learning from home.

To help students practice their endodontic skills at home, a kit was assembled and distributed to all D1 students regardless of their location. To guide students as they worked on their projects, a step-by-step demonstration video was recorded and real-time instruction with dedicated general dentist simulation instructors occurred through Zoom. In addition, students created portfolios using photographs, in lieu of radiographs, to document their progress and presented their portfolios in Zoom for peer evaluation and faculty feedback.

  • Discuss small group, peer-to-peer endodontic portfolio presentations in an online teaching environment.
