Creating a Database of Patient Cases: Using Resources Creatively During COVID-19

Case-based learning has been widely researched and accepted as a beneficial tool in dental education. High-quality cases are essential for educators to use in learning and assessment, yet they are often difficult to find or create. The current pandemic environment and the transition to the Integrated National Board Dental Examination has emphasized the importance of providing case-based learning opportunities.

During this presentation, attendees will learn about using technology to create a secure and searchable patient database for use in case-based learning. Additionally, the presenters will address the integral role of faculty calibration and support services in achieving this desired outcome.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discover opportunities provided by the interruption of dental education during COVID-19 for quality improvement projects.
  • Identify a pathway to safely collect and store patient cases for use in learning and assessment.
  • Construct an ongoing method for patient case collection beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.
