eStudy 132 - Data Storytelling through Dashboards - Google Looker Studio

Description:
Dashboards can be one of the most useful tools for transparent data sharing. They help organizations synthesize & make meaning from large amounts of data. Unfortunately, most dashboards miss the mark. They are crammed with data, hard to read and are not visually engaging. The story gets lost in the chaos. In this workshop, we will share tools that will help evaluators decide when a dashboard is the right fit for their audience. We will review best practices and examples of how to make your story come to life visually in an interactive dashboard. Then, together we will walk through a step-by-step process of building a dashboard using Google Data Studio. This platform is easy to use, free, and can be linked to data stored in Google Sheets. We will discuss the important logistics of sharing your dashboard with your audiences, so it becomes a tool they use, not a tool they forget.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will learn how to determine if a dashboard is the right tool for communicating data to their key audiences
  • Participants will learn tips on how to make an automated dashboard visually engaging and tell a story
  • Participants will learn how to build a dashboard in Google Data Studio
  • Participants will learn how to build a communication plan that accompanies a dashboard
  • Participants will be better equipped to present data that tells a story, leading to increased audience engagement and data-driven decision making

This workshop is aligned to AEA’s Competencies and Guiding Principles as follows:

Competencies:
A dashboard can be a powerful tool to facilitating shared decision making for evaluation (5.3). It makes data transparent which enables the evaluation's process and quality to be monitored overtime (4.8). Data communication through visually engaging dashboards can communicate findings in meaningful ways that enhance the effectiveness of the evaluation (5.6).The proposed webinar content aligns with the following AEA competencies:

Guiding Principles:

  • Respect for People: Evaluators honor the dignity, well-being, and self-worth of individuals and acknowledge the influence of culture within and across groups.
  • Common Good and Equity: Evaluators strive to contribute to the common good and advancement of an equitable and just society.
  • Respect for People: Evaluators honor the dignity, well-being, and self-worth of individuals and acknowledge the influence of culture within and across groups.

Historically, when data is collected it is not made visible to those who the data was collected from. Visualizing data collected through an interactive dashboard can be a way to share data back with your audience so they can be engaged in meaning making. This increases our integrity as evaluators by increasing transparency and responsiveness. Making data accessible to our audiences can empower them to ask questions, gain knowledge, and make the changes they wish to see in their communities.

The following guiding principles are applicable to the webinar content:

  • Respect for People: Evaluators honor the dignity, well-being, and self-worth of individuals and acknowledge the influence of culture within and across groups.
  • Common Good and Equity: Evaluators strive to contribute to the common good and advancement of an equitable and just society.
