    Description

    3.4 million people in the United States live with active epilepsy. Psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety and attention deficit disorders commonly occur in people with epilepsy and often present as complex and challenging comorbidities to manage.
    This webinar will enhance multilevel primary and behavioral care clinician skills in recognizing and managing psychiatric disorders in children and adults with epilepsy.

    • Elaine T. Kiriakopoulos, MD, MSc, Dartmouth College

      Dr. Elaine Kiriakopoulos is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, a neurologist and the Co-founder and Director of the HOBSCOTCH Institute for Cognitive Health and Well-Being at the Dartmouth Health Epilepsy Center. Her research and programmatic efforts target building multisector partnerships to reduce disparities in the care of people with epilepsy, ensuring the most vulnerable populations have access to quality epilepsy care and community resources. Her multifaceted professional experience as an academic epileptologist, national non-profit leader and public health researcher informs her work at Dartmouth.

    • Dr. Jay Salpekar

      Dr. Jay Salpekar is the Director of the Pediatric Neuropsychiatry Center at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, and is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at Johns Hopkins University Medical School. He received Bachelor’s and Medical degrees from Washington University in St. Louis and continued at Barnes Hospital for general psychiatry and then did a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the Yale University Child Study Center. He has been an academician overlapping psychiatry and neurology for over 25 years. Dr. Salpekar has distinguished fellow status in the American Epilepsy Society, the American Neuropsychiatric Association and in the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The American Epilepsy Society recently honored him with the Rebecca Goldman Kaufman Award for Ethical Neuropsychiatry. He serves on the editorial boards for several journals including Epilepsy and Behavior, Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, Epilepsy Currents, and the British Journal of Psychiatry--open. He is a long time principal investigator for clinical research projects involving psychiatric illness associated with epilepsy, and is widely published on how neuropsychiatric paradigms apply to pediatrics. He recently co-edited a textbook, Pediatric Neuropsychiatry: A Case Based Approach, which emphasized those themes. He is internationally renowned, with clinical consultation and lectures that span the globe. Current projects highlight the overlap of anxiety with epilepsy and explore novel treatments that may address both conditions simultaneously.
