Implicit bias in healthcare has far-reaching consequences that can directly impact outcomes. Research has shown that patients who experience bias may have less trust in their provider, be less likely to comply with provider recommendations, be less satisfied with their care, and less willing to return for follow-up visits.

Cultural competence and humility are pillars of an equitable healthcare system and understanding these principles allows providers to reshape the power imbalances between themselves and their patients; fostering trust, collaboration, and shared decision-making.

This webinar reviews how cultural competence and humility empower healthcare providers to bridge gaps and eliminate disparities in epilepsy care by challenging providers to reflect on and self-evaluate their own biases. Participants will learn to spot implicit biases, look critically at treatment plans to ensure fair treatment of all patients, and adapt communication strategies in an effort to eliminate bias and address inherent power imbalances between themselves and their patients.

Dr.  Elizabeth Felton provides actionable recommendations for practicing cultural competence and cultural humility in epilepsy care settings in an effort to improve patient outcomes for all patients.
