One Size Doesn’t Fit All: How to Engage Donors by Generation

Different generations are motivated to give for different reasons. They also give in very different ways. How can you build impactful and sustainable relationships with each generation?   • Kishshana Palmer, CFRE

    Kishshana Palmer is an international speaker, trainer, and coach with an 18-year background in fundraising, marketing, and talent management. She’s a supernova on any stage and platform due to her charismatic and candid delivery. It doesn’t matter if she’s speaking about philanthropy, living your most authentic life, or diversity, the energy she brings to the stage is always entertaining and edifying.
    Kishshana is the founder of The Rooted Collaborative -- a global online community for Women of Color in Fundraising. She's the author of "Hey, I'm New Here", the host of the podcast Take it Offline, an adjunct professor at Baruch College, a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), a BoardSource Certified Governance Trainer (CGT), and an AFP Master Trainer. When an organization wants to grow, find and retain people on their team, raise money, and more she is the philanthropic fairy godmother they have on speed dial. Her work isn’t limited to organizations, she also coaches social good professionals.
    Kishshana is a NYC girl and mother of one wonderful teenage daughter. Kishshana is the epitome of your classic 90's Queens homegirl and quintessential corner office executive. She is your daily dose of Claire Huxtable with a side of Blanche Devereaux.

  • Jen Shang, Ph.D.

    Professor Jen Shang, Co-Founder and Co-Director, Institute for Sustainable Philanthropy, is the world’s first PhD in Philanthropy. She is also the world’s only philanthropic psychologist. Her research has been covered in the New York Times, BBC, The Guardian, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Advancing Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Times. Jen has been published in numerous academic journals including, the Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, the Economic Journal, Experimental Economics, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, and Nonprofit Management and Leadership.

  • Katrina VanHuss

    Katrina, CEO, Turnkey,  has been developing successful fundraiser recognition programs for organizations like the American Lung Association, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Special Olympics, and the Alzheimer’s Association since 1989, when she founded Turnkey. Her client’s successes and her dedication to research have made her a sought-after speaker, presenting at national conferences for Blackbaud, Peer to Peer Professional Forum, Nonprofit Pro P2P and her clients’ national meetings, to name a few.

  • Kelley Jarrett

    Kelley Jarrett, Director of Marketing - Nonprofit, Blackbaud, has built her professional career around a combined passion for creating compelling marketing strategies and helping nonprofits achieve optimal mission impact. Prior to her current role as head of marketing for Nonprofit Solutions at Blackbaud, Kelley served in many service-oriented positions at Blackbaud as a solutions consultant, solutions engineer, and in customer success leadership, learning first hand of the challenges and opportunities nonprofits face, and helping to create solutions for success. Kelley enjoys balancing her home life, living near the beach in Charleston, SC as a wife and mother to 2 independent girls—with her passion for social good, both at Blackbaud and as a Board Director of Palmetto Goodwill.

  • Lynnette Adams, MBA, MFA

    Lynnette Adams (M.A. in Public Relations and Organizational Communication) is the director of development at the Community College of Aurora Foundation and Adjunct Faculty Instructor for the nonprofit Leadership Management Masters University of Denver. She has over ten years of experience in fundraising and donor relations with a focus around building strong donor relationships and events. Her experience includes fundraising workshops at Colorado Free University and board leadership on donor development and donor stewardship.

  • Steve MacLaughlin

    Steve MacLaughlin is the Vice President of Product Management at Blackbaud and best-selling author of Data Driven Nonprofits. Steve has spent 20+ years driving innovation with a broad range of companies, government institutions, and nonprofit organizations. MacLaughlin serves on the board of the Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN) and is a frequent speaker at conferences and events. Steve earned both his undergraduate degree and a Master of Science degree in Interactive Media from Indiana University.

  • Josh Hirsch, MS

    Josh Hirsch is the Crypto Philanthropy Education Manager for The Giving Block. He has worked in the nonprofit sector since 2006 with a focus on educational philanthropy for both public charter and independent private schools. He has an extensive background in social media, digital communications, and marketing along with experience in grant research and writing, individual giving, special event planning, stewardship, and cultivation of donors. He is the Florida Caucus Representative for the Association of Fundraising Professionals First Coast Chapter and Past-President of the Palm Beach County Chapter. Josh is also a member of the AFPeeps, the social media vanguard for the AFP International Conference and other AFP initiatives. He has spoken nationally on digital communications and has had numerous articles published in professional journals. Josh received a Master of Science in Family, Youth and Community Sciences and a Bachelor of Science in Advertising from the University of Florida. He has a Certificate in Strategic Fundraising and Philanthropy from Bay Path University and is a Certified Social Media Strategist by the National Institute for Social Media.
