Description

This session presents different aspects of getting insights into inventors’ thought process(es) and interaction with Examiners. Primarily, the session plans to bring forward panelists’ experiences as patent practitioners and Examiners to improve the overall invention gathering and patent procurement practice. This session will attempt to provide various views on how to approach these and other issues while dealing with inventors and Examiners. Generally, anyone who interacts with the patenting process will find this webinar of interest.

  • Julie Burke

    Julie Burke is an independent patent prosecution consultant who until recently was a Patent Scientist at Knobbe Martens in San Diego, CA. Prior to that, Julie worked for twenty years at the USPTO, first as an Examiner and then as a Quality Assurance Specialist. Before entering patent practice, Julie was a post-doctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University. Julie has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine, and a BA in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Johns Hopkins.

  • Rachel Kahler

    Rachel Kahler is an in-house Patent Agent at General Mills in Minneapolis, where she has worked for the past 7 years. At General Mills, Rachel is responsible for patent preparation and prosecution; global patent filing strategy; designing and improving patent processes; maintenance and strategy of patent portfolios; and support product platforms. Prior to joining General Mills, Rachel worked as a Patent Agent for several years at law firms. Rachel has a B.S. in Microbiology from South Dakota State University and a Ph.D. in Cancer Biology from University of Minnesota. Rachel is also the Vice-Chair of AIPLA's Patent Agents Committee and a member of AIPLA's Membership Committee.

  • Laura Hupp

    Laura Hupp is an experienced patent attorney at Merchant & Gould’s Minneapolis office. She focuses on computer and life science intellectual property law. She has used her unique background in biotechnology and software patenting to assist her clients in understanding the patent process and how it relates to science. Laura has a J.D. from University of Iowa College of Law, an M.S. Biomedical Science from Baylor College of Medicine, and a B.A. Biochemistry and Music from Simpson College.

  • Shubhrangshu (Rushi) Sengupta

    Rushi Sengupta is a patent agent at US Conec Ltd. where he handles patent and other intellectual property related matters passive optical and mechanical components for fiber-optic connectors. Previously, he worked for various law firms handling patent prosecution matters for a wide range of clients in different technology areas. His technical background is in Electrical Engineering and Optical Communications.
