Through research-driven updates, case-based discussions, and forward-looking dialogue, participants will examine how registry data, emerging technologies, and evolving models of care are influencing outcomes across the continuum, from initial injury to long-term recovery and system readiness.
This program is not just about what we know, it’s about what still needs to be studied, how clinicians at every career stage can contribute, and how the American Burn Association is helping define the path forward.
Upon completion of this activity, at least 75% of attendees will report they are able to:
1. Synthesize current advances and clinical gaps to project critical shifts in burn care delivery, research priorities, and technological integration looking toward 2040.
2. Assess mass casualty, Large-Scale Combat Operations, and austere environment readiness gaps, determining how standard surgical and resuscitation protocols must adapt during resource-constrained conditions.
3. Debate controversial fluid management strategies to mitigate post-burn endothelial dysfunction, coagulopathy, and hyperinflammation.
4. Appraise the strengths, limitations, and methodological considerations of large datasets including the Burn Care Quality Platform (BCQP), Burn Model System (BMS), and NIDILRR data for driving quality improvement and patient-centered research.
5. Evaluate the current evidence and notable research deficits surrounding surgical excision timing, skin substitutes, autografting techniques, and economic considerations to optimize long-term burn patient outcomes.
6. Develop a comprehensive, evidence-informed inpatient and outpatient management plan to address hypermetabolism including pharmacological blunting, nutrition delivery, early physical rehabilitation, and social determinants of health.
Target Audience: Burn Fellows, Surgical Residents, Advanced Practice Providers (NPs/PAs), Nurses, Rehabilitation Specialists, Pharmacists, Dietitians, Social Workers, and the full burn clinical team, researchers.
Course Directors: Victoria Miles, MD, EMT-P, Bonnie Carney, PhD, Clifford Sheckter, MD, MS, FABA
Accreditation Statement
The American Burn Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The American Burn Association designates live for a maximum of 4.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
