Description

Understanding of the determinants of ventilation defects and ventilation heterogeneity may lead to more efficacious treatments for acute and chronic lungs diseases and can provide an additional approach for monitoring treatments to improve long-term outcomes for patients. X-ray velocimetry imaging and analysis can reveal ventilation defects in a similar manner to hyperpolarized gas imaging, as well as provide quantitative detail of airflow within each airway. Data identifying the level and the location of changes in local airflow throughout the lung that are produced by the disease or treatments may augment the functional clinical information currently provided primarily by spirometry. The potential is high for functional imaging to more effectively and efficiently identify and differentiate factors in various lung regions that contribute to respiratory compromise. This symposium addresses state-of-the-art, non-invasive lung imaging used to determine functional deficits in regional lung motion and airflow.
