    Prof James Chalmers is a Professor and Consultant Respiratory Physician at the School of Medicine, University of Dundee. His laboratory works primarily on the interaction between neutrophils and bacteria during acute and chronic airway infections. Major areas of research with relevance to AMR include phase 1 and phase 2 studies of non-antibiotic alternative therapies for respiratory infections, the development of diagnostics to reduce antibiotic use by more accurately identifying bacterial infections and work to understand the selective drivers of antimicrobial resistance in chronic airways diseases such as bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis where multidrug resistant Gram-negative infections are common. His work is funded by the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, Scottish Government, EU and the pharmaceutical industry.

    Prof Francesco Blasi is Professor of Respiratory Medicine Department of Pathophysiology and Transplantation at the University of Milan, Italy, as well as Head of Internal Medicine Department and Respiratory Unit of the Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan, Italy. He is also director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Center of the Lombardia Regional Referral CF Center and currently a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Milan. He was president of the European Respiratory Society from 2012–2013, president of the Italian Respiratory Society from 2016–2017, and since 2019, he has been vice-president of the Italian Society of Cystic Fibrosis.

    Prof Blasi has published more than 450 papers in international journals [h-index (January 2022) WEB of Science: 64; SCOPUS: 58]. His research interests include pneumonia, COPD, bronchiectasis, tuberculosis and NTM infections, cystic fibrosis and lung transplantation.
