Description

Course Description
Remote hearings have become the new normal for many judges and litigants due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This interactive conversation will discuss the rapid expansion of remote courts, the impact on court users, and the promise and pitfalls of online courts to achieve equal access to justice for all.

Learning Objectives
As a result of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of online courts in improving access to justice
  • Prepare for advances in technology and the possible long-term use of remote courts

  • Hon. Thomas M. Donnelly, Circuit Judge, Circuit Court of Cook County

    Judge Donnelly serves as a Circuit Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County. He is assigned to the Law Division. Sworn in as a judge in 2000, he currently serves in the Law Division, Trial Section. He has tried over 300 jury trials.

    Judge Donnelly served from 2016 to 2019 as the inaugural Chair of the Illinois Judicial College Board of Trustees and currently remains on the Board with a term expiring 2024. He has served as a Board lisiaon to the Committee on Judicial Education and currently is the Board liaison to the Committee on Judicial Branch Staff Education.

    Additionally, Judge Donnelly serves on the faculty of the National Judicial College and teaches judges around the country. He served on the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Pretrial Practices from its inception until its final report 2018-2020. The Illinois Supreme Court appointed him as one of two judicial representatives on the Statutory Court Fee Task Force and he served on the task force from its inception until its final report 2016-2019. He has taught at Loyola Law School for the past thirty years. While he has taught five different courses, he currently teaches Illinois Civil Procedure. He has taught or lectured at many other law schools: Marquette, University of Chicago, Washington & Lee, DePaul. He teaches widely with bar associations and other groups.

  • Professor Richard Susskind

    Professor Richard Susskind OBE is an author, speaker, and independent adviser to major professional firms and to national governments. His main area of expertise is the future of professional service and, in particular, the way in which the IT and the Internet are changing the work of lawyers. He has worked on legal technology for over 30 years. He lectures internationally, has written many books, and advised on numerous government inquiries. Richard lectures internationally and has been invited to speak in over 40 countries and has addressed audiences (in person and electronically), numbering more than 250,000. He has written and edited numerous books, including Expert Systems in Law (OUP, 1987), The Future of Law (OUP, 1996), Transforming the Law (OUP, 2000), The Susskind Interviews: Legal Experts in Changing Times (Sweet & Maxwell, 2005), The End of Lawyers? Rethinking the Nature of Legal Services (OUP, 2008), Tomorrow’s Lawyers (2013), and has written around 150 columns for The Times. His work has been translated into 10 languages.
