Course Description
This course will offer an overview of bankruptcy issues that impact the management of family law cases. Issues will include: the automatic stay, the effect of dismissal or discharge of a bankruptcy, and the ability to collect on a judgment when a bankruptcy has been filed.

Hon. Amy C. Lannerd, Circuit Judge, 8th Judicial Circuit

Amy C. Lannerd is a circuit judge in the Eighth Judicial Circuit. Judge Lannerd presides over a Felony docket and the Small Claims dockets in Adams County, Illinois. Previously, she has presided over the LM/eviction, misdemeanor and first appearance dockets.

Judge Lannerd received her B.S. degree from the University of Arizona and her J.D. from University of Denver School of Law. Judge Lannerd has presented on numerous civil and domestic relations topics for the Illinois State Bar Association and Adams County Bar Association. Prior to the bench, she practiced bankruptcy, civil, and family law for 15 years.
Hon. Deborah L. Thorne, Bankruptcy Judge, U.S. District Court, N.D. Illinois

Deborah L. Thorne was sworn in as a bankruptcy judge for the Northern District of Illinois on October 22, 2015.

Deborah received her B.A. from Macalester College, a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Duke University and a J.D. from Illinois Institute of Technology. Deborah is past chair of the Chicago Bar Association Bankruptcy and Restructuring Committee and past member of the Board of Governors and chair of the Bankruptcy Committee for the Seventh Circuit Bar Association. She previously served as Vice President for Communications and Information Technology for the American Bankruptcy Institute and as a member of the Executive Committee. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors.

Judge Thorne is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. Deborah is the author of The Preference Defense Handbook: The Circuits Divided and a co-author of Interrupted! Understanding Bankruptcy’s Effects on Manufacturing Supply Chains, both published by the American Bankruptcy Institute. Deborah is married to Jerry Esrig, a judge on the Circuit Court of Cook County. They have two adult children, Daniel and Rachel. In her free time, Deborah enjoys traveling, reading and rowing.
