Description

Course Description: Building on Course 1, the Dynamics of Domestic Violence, this course will provide participants with a foundational understanding on the effects of children exposed to domestic violence, the impact of trauma, child resiliency, and court stakeholder decision-making.

Credit Hour(s): 1.5

  • Darren Mitchell, J.D.

    Darren Mitchell is a consultant on domestic violence and other violence against women issues, with a focus on child custody and domestic violence, firearms and domestic violence, interstate child custody, protection order issuance and enforcement, and full faith and credit. Since 2000, he has trained judges, attorneys, advocates, and other professionals across the country and has published several articles on these topics. His consulting clients include the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the National Center for State Courts, the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence (for which he served as Interim Executive Director), the Center for Court Innovation, the Legal Resource Center on Violence Against Women, the American Bar Association, the Battered Women’s Justice Project, and other national and state organizations.

    From 2005-2016, Mr. Mitchell was Co-Executive Director of the Legal Resource Center, a national nonprofit that provides training and technical assistance to attorneys and others who assist survivors of domestic violence in complex interstate custody cases. From 2001 to 2004, Mr. Mitchell managed the National Center on Full Faith and Credit (NCFFC), a Washington, D.C.-based national training and technical assistance project of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Prior to that, he was a staff attorney with the NCFFC, a consumer advocate, a litigator in private practice, and a clerk to a federal district court judge.

    Mr. Mitchell is a graduate of Stanford Law School (J.D. 1995), Harvard University (A.M. 2001), and UCLA (B.S. 1988).

  • Chantelle Porter, Circuit Judge, 18th Judicial Circuit of DuPage County

    Chantelle Porter was appointed as a Circuit Judge in the 18th Judicial Circuit of DuPage County.
    Chantelle has spent most of her career representing children and families. She was a Guardian ad litem with the Cook County Public Guardian’s Office and the supervisor of the DuPage County Public Defender Juvenile Division. She spent time in private practice with A. Traub & Associates representing families in divorce and serving as a Guardian ad Litem in both Domestic Relations and Juvenile Court.
    Chantelle’s advocacy included her appointments to the Illinois CASA Board the Illinois Children’s Justice Task Force, the Illinois Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Guardian ad Litem Education and the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Equality.
    An active member of the legal community, Chantelle has served on the Board of Governors for the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA). She is also a member of the DuPage County Bar Association (DCBA) and is a Past President of the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers and served on the Board of the DuPage County Bar Foundation. Chantelle has received many accolades in her career, including the DCBA Pro Bono Service awards.
    Chantelle is a graduate of The Ohio State University and graduated from DePaul University College of Law.

  • Maureen Reid, MSW, RSW

    During her 42 years of social work practice, Maureen Reid has worked with children and parents experiencing domestic violence and involved in the family court system. She developed a protocol for collaborative community conferencing of high-risk domestic violence cases and chaired over forty safety planning conferences that included the woman, her supporters, and representatives from the Criminal Justice and Violence Against Women sectors, to develop coordinated safety plans and risk management strategies.

    She has also participated in the research and development of the Caring Dad’s Program for fathers who have been abusive to their children and/or partner. Maureen trains with the National Council for Juvenile and Family Court Judges in the United States in the area of Enhancing Judicial Skills in Domestic Violence Cases. She is a consultant with the Centre for Children in the Justice System of the Family Court where she conducts high-conflict custody and access assessments with Dr. Peter Jaffe.

    In addition, she has a private therapy practice where she provides counseling services for those experiencing violence in their lives. Maureen teaches at the University of Western Ontario at King’s College, School of Social Work, and Brescia College.
