The Intelligent Migration: Clean, Classify, and Configure SharePoint in One Motion

DESCRIPTION

Moving content from file shares into SharePoint Online is rarely a “lift-and-shift” success story—duplicates, ROT, inconsistent naming/versioning, and missing metadata can turn a migration into a more expensive, higher-risk mess in a new platform. In this webinar, Jordan Uytterhagen demonstrates an “intelligent migration” workflow for cleaning, deduplicating, classifying, and configuring SharePoint so organizations can migrate only what’s valuable, apply structure and metadata along the way, and reduce downstream governance risk and storage cost.

Participants will see practical approaches for: identifying true duplicates using file hashing, producing defensible audit trails for deletion actions, rapidly building SharePoint libraries/views/folder structures via repeatable templates, migrating content with validation and reporting, and using machine learning-based classification (including confidence thresholds and continuous retraining) to improve placement and governance outcomes before and during migration.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completing this session, attendees should be able to:

  • Explain why “migrating data as-is” increases cost and risk (duplicates/ROT, missing classification/metadata) when moving from file shares to SharePoint Online.
  • Describe a defensible deduplication approach using file hashing and reporting to support audit requirements.
  • Identify key SharePoint configuration elements needed before migration (libraries, views, folder structures, metadata/labels) to support governance outcomes.
  • Summarize how ML-assisted classification can improve migration decisions (confidence thresholds, retraining, and placement rules).
