Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Other Infections of the Genital Tract

This self-study course discusses microorganisms causing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and diseases of the genital tract. The discussions will include the pathogenesis as well as the diagnosis of these agents. Section 1 is devoted to bacteria that cause STDs, while Section II is devoted to viruses. Section III covers miscellaneous infections of the genitourinary tract, some of which are sexually transmitted. Also discussed in Section III are infectious agents that generally cause mild infections in mothers but can produce serious life threatening diseases in neonates. This section also presents information on the collection of material from the genital tract and discusses medicolegal aspects of STDs.
