LEI: Tests and Test Questions: Best Practices for Composing Multiple Choice, True/False and Essays

This course will review the best practices in test and item construction based on research evidence and expert opinions. Multiple choice questions will be the focus with additional coverage of variations on multiple choice as well as true/false items.  

LEARNING OBJECTIVES


Following this presentation, and with reference to notes, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the difference between validity and reliability of examinations
  • Explain the difference between difficulty and discrimination of test items
  • Critique tests for consistency with best practices in test construction
  • Critique various multiple choice and true/false questions, based on the best practices of quality item construction
  • Explain the rationale for each best practice.
  • Recognize test questions written at recall vs higher levels of a modified Bloom’s taxonomy
  • Recognize and name the formats of non-conventional multiple choice and true/false items.

CE ACCREDITATION
This self-study is P.A.C.E. ® accredited. The instruction level for this activity is Intermediate. Three and one-half (3.5) P.A.C.E. ® contact hours and three and one-half (3.5) Florida credit hours in the area General (Education) will be awarded to participants. ASCLS P.A.C.E.® is accepted by the ASCP/ASCLS/AGT Board of Certification and all states, including Florida and California, as an approved provider of continuing education for recertification and licensure. ASCLS is an approved provider with CE Broker for Florida licensees.
