Building on the foundation from Writing Instructional Objectives Part 1, this unit deepens the participants understanding of verb selection and specification of conditions and degrees in each domain. It answers questions such as, “Can the same verb be used in different domains or at different cognitive levels?” The importance of creating congruence among objectives, instruction, and assessment is emphasized, regardless of the sequence in which those components are created. The unit concludes with case studies that allow participants to practice analyzing learning situations for congruence and suggesting adjustments when needed. As a result, participants should be able to critique and improve their own instruction.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this self-study course, participants will be able to:

• Select verbs for behaviors that effectively communicate the instructional intent in each domain of learning.
• Recognize instances in the cognitive domain, when higher order thinking is needed and compose objectives that effectively reflect that expectation.
• Describe a simplified Bloom’s style hierarchy of the cognitive domain and provide examples of thinking at each simplified level
• Compose affective objectives that set reasonable expectations for students and professionals.
• Devise conditions and degree for an objective in each domain that are practical, reasonable, and assessable.
• Recognize occasions when it may be appropriate to modify the sequence in ideal backward design.
• Assess congruence of objectives, instruction, and student assessment in given scenarios and recommend adjustments to improve congruence when needed.
• Judge the fairness of student assessments in relation to the stated objectives.

CE ACCREDITATION

This self-study is P.A.C.E. ® accredited. The instruction level for this activity is Intermediate. Three (3) P.A.C.E. ® contact hours and three (3) Florida credit hours in the area General (Education) will be awarded to participants. ASCLS P.A.C.E.® is accepted by the ASCP/ASCLS/AGT Board of Certification and all states, including Florida and California, as an approved provider of continuing education for recertification and licensure.
