Description
Suturing is an integral part of surgical practice. Wound closure, hemostasis, bandage application, restoration of normal anatomic topography, maintenance of the nasal valve, prevention of free margin distortion are some of the many applications suturing. Several techniques have been developed over the years including the simple interrupted suture, running cuticular suture, running subcuticular suture, horizontal mattress suture, vertical mattress suture, tip stitch, set-back suture, simple buried subcuticular suture, buried vertical mattress suture, figure of 8 suture, pulley suture, purse-string suture, dog ear reduction suture, to name a few.
Learning Objectives
Following this activity, participants should be able to:
- Name at least 8 different types of suturing techniques.
- Perform a set-back suture, buried vertical mattress suture, running subcuticular suture, horizontal mattress suture, purse-string suture, and figure of eight suture.
- Describe which sutures are best for hemostasis and which ones have been shown to result in better cosmetic outcomes.
