Description
Anti-fungal susceptibility testing is not widely available across clinical microbiology labs. Yet the increase in serious fungal infections requiring anti-fungal therapy necessities a better understanding of important resistance mechanisms and interpretation of susceptibility test results. This webinar aims to increase knowledge of anti-fungal susceptibility concepts important for clinical and public health microbiologists at all levels, whether testing is performed in-house or referred. This webinar will review important intrinsic resistance profiles and common anti-fungal resistance mechanisms in human pathogens. Additionally, the use and interpretation of epidemiological cut-offs for patient care will be compared to clinical breakpoints. Finally, recommendations for when to perform anti-fungal susceptibility testing and how to report breakpoints and/or epidemiological cut-offs results will be discussed.
Learning objectives:
- Review important intrinsic resistance profiles and common anti-fungal resistance mechanisms of human fungal pathogens.
- Compare clinical breakpoints and epidemiological cut-off values and their interpretation for patient care.
- Devise ‘when to test’ and ‘how to report’ strategies for anti-fungal susceptibility testing according to internationally recognized best practices.
