Description
Detecting bloodstream
parasites is a critical, and time-sensitive, but often rare event for
laboratorians. This case-based webinar will cover criteria and tools for
staining and microscopic examination of blood films for diagnosis of
Plasmodium,
Babesia, Trypanosoma, microfilariae, etc. Other organisms that
may be detected on peripheral blood smear will also be covered. The webinar
will show both classic and challenging presentations.
Learning objectives:
- List the key morphologic features of important blood parasites.
- Discuss the pros and cons of different laboratory test methods for diagnosing malaria.
- Describe how the percentage of parasitemia is calculated and its role in patient management.
