Sophisticated systems capable of automating specimen processing and culture workup including digital imaging have recently emerged for the clinical microbiology laboratory. As these systems have only recently been introduced into clinical laboratories in the United States, there is limited experience and published research supporting the cost effectiveness of these systems or offering guidance on system implementation. This series aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the available systems, give an introduction to developing a business case for adoption of automation, address the regulatory considerations of system adoption, review the impact of implementation including changes in workflow and culture workup, describe innovations in automated imagining, and provide insight through the shared experiences of early system adopters. At the conclusion of this course, microbiology laboratory professionals considering automation or in the early stages of automation adoption should have the knowledge and skills to navigate the acquisition and implementation process.
- Explain the two major total laboratory automation systems currently on the market
- Evaluate hospital and laboratory data to develop a business case for automation
- Describe considerations for system adoption and implementation including regulatory and workflow issues
