Description
Digital Imaging and Communication in Nondestructive
Evaluation (DICONDE) is a standard defined by an ASTM committee formed in 1999,
for handling, sharing, storing, and exchanging information between DICONDE-compliant
digital imaging systems. It is based on the Digital Imaging and Communications
in Medicine (DICOM) standard, which allowed the transition from film-based imaging to digital in the healthcare field. A similar transition is underway
in the field of non-destructive testing and validation which is greatly
facilitated by having a single standard for these digital imaging facilitating
exchange between devices from different vendors.
This presentation will provide the rationale for having a
standard for image exchange and a brief overview of the standard. It will
familiarize the audience with the metadata defined to identify the images and
the protocol used to exchange the information. This will allow attendees to be
proactive when specifying or purchasing the devices used for testing and
evaluation and give them the basic skills to display the metadata for recording
and QA purposes.
After attending this presentation, attendees
will be able to:
- Locate in the DICONDE metadata the essential information about the image acquisition, equipment and software used, and anything needed to create an audit trail
- Verify the parameters used to acquire the images
- Create a report using the necessary information from the images
- Prepare additional tests based on the results reported by the DICONDE images
- Use a digital image viewer for review purposes of the images and drill down to the metadata
- Interpret DICONDE conformance specifications
- Plan for future acquisition and/or specification of devices using the DICONDE standard
