AAC – New Low-cost and Innovative ways for Communicating


This 60 minute webinar will discuss and demonstrate how to make 10 new AAC access solutions including: five minute do yourself key guards; non-conductive minutes; stylus adaptations; five minute EyE Gaze boards and hands-free eye gaze mounts; mounting communication devices in a van, a car, or a wheelchair; creating height adjustable mobile mounting solutions for Electronic eye gaze devices; and dual purpose mounts for both dedicated speech generating devices and an iPad, and recessing an iPad into a wheelchair tray.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify at least 5 solutions that can be created to support communication needs of individuals.
  2. Identify at least 5 materials that can be used in creating low cost AAC devices.
  3. Identify at least 3 method for fabricating low cost AAC solutions.



Therese Willkomm

Therese Willkomm, PhD, is the Director of New Hampshire’s State Assistive Technology Program with the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and is an associate professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy. Dr. Willkomm is known nationally and internationally as “The MacGyver” of Assistive Technology and has designed and fabricated over one thousand solutions for individuals with disabilities including her patented A.T. Pad Stand, a multiuse assistive technology mounting device. She is also known throughout the county for her trainings on awesome iPAD apps and adaptations. She has presented her work in 42 states, eight foreign countries and three U.S. Territories; has written 22 assistive technology related publications including her new book titled: “Assistive Technology Solutions in Minutes – Book 2 – Ordinary Items, Extraordinary Solutions ; and has appeared on RFD TV, CNN and most recently NPR Science Friday.
