Overview
This session will provide a comprehensive look at the assistive technology solutions now available for individuals who have a hearing loss. Participants will leave with a solid foundation on communication and awareness solutions for home, school, work, and life.

  1. Describe and demonstrate three technology advances with hearing aids.
  2. Describe and demonstrate at least one accessibility solution for each of the following: school, work, home, and community access.
  3. Describe and demonstrate three apps that create access for hearing loss on mobile technology devices.

Arizona Technology Access Program (AzTAP)
Heidi L. Lervik is an Assistive Technology Specialist for the Arizona Technology Access Program (AzTAP) who has many years of experience working with individuals with various disabilities. Heidi spent 20 years working for Rehabilitation Services Administration and the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing. She also worked for seven years at Cochlear Americas, first as an Outreach Specialist and then a Surgical Representative. Her education includes Bachelor degrees in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Arizona. She is also a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor from the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) and a RESNA Certified Assistive Technology Professional (ATP). Heidi joined the AzTAP team in September 2015.

Laura Plummer
Wisconsin Department of Health Services
Laura Plummer, MA, CRC, ATP is the Assistive Technology Program Coordinator for the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. In this position she oversees Wistech, Wisconsin's Assistive Technology Act program, the iCanConnect program, and collaborates with program partners to ensure comprehensive AT programs are available for individuals with disabilities.
Ms. Plummer's experience includes conducting assistive technology assessments in the areas of hearing loss, vision loss, and communication. She provides technical assistance to stakeholders, connects consumers to programs and resources and conducts trainings on assistive technology at the local, statewide, and national levels. Ms. Plummer has both Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Deafness Rehabilitation Counseling and she takes an active role in learning and using the latest in electronic gadgets.
