VE-EDU-27: The Power of Pivot: Building Virtual Environments that Foster Essential Skills

Overview

Learners will understand basic strategies to ensure virtual environments are accommodating. This session will show examples of building engagement, using UDL, incorporating person centered approaches, and learning to pivot when change is hard. In many ways the pandemic brought out the best and worst in education. While there are strengths and weaknesses in each setting, we should be embracing all settings. Virtual learning afforded TEAM MARIO, the opportunity to build on career readiness skills, social skills, life skills in the safety of their own home. Change when embraced appropriately can build resilience, promote learning and build a better world.

Content Disclosure: This session is focused on case studies and resources developed by TEAM MARIO, a non-profit autism awareness organization in the lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas.  The organization as a whole has received local grants to fund programs and community events. There will be limited or no information provided about similar projects or case studies.

First Learning Objective: At the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to correctly identify three strategies for accommodating students within virtual learning environments.
Second Learning Objective: At the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to correctly identify 7 components of person centered planning.
Third Learning Objective: At the end of this lesson the learner will be able to identify 3 areas of universal design for learning.

Biography

Lisa Beccera-Walker is a speech language pathologist with over 10 years experience in autism and related disorders across the life span of individuals on the spectrum. Lisa is also the program director for TEAM MARIO, a non-profit autism awareness organization in the lower Rio Grande Valley. She also works full time as an SLP for an Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECI) and supports the 0-3 population in a variety of areas. As part of her work with TEAM MARIO, she works alongside teenagers and young adults with autism who partake in TEAM MARIO's weekly SOAR!© program to acquire needed skills for activities of daily living and college/workforce transition. Lisa has a Master's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Texas- Pan American. She has extensive training in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol, Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP), and Verbal Behavior Analysis. Lisa has received specialized training from nationally recognized providers Dr. Vincent Carbone, Nancy Kaufman and Kelly McKinnon. Lisa has provided training for school districts, law enforcement organizations, companies, and non-profit organizations in the areas of autism awareness, autism in the workplace, challenging behavior and communication, AAC, and social skills training. She is a LAMP Certified Professional and has authored peer reviewed articles in the Journal of the American Academy of Special Education Professionals and the Journal of the Texas Associations for the Education of Young Children among others. Recently she has authored a textbook chapter in the area of challenging behavior and AAC. Lisa has also participated in state, national, and international research presentations and looks forward to making a difference in the lives of individuals with all abilities.

Lisa receives a salary from Region One Educational Service Center, where she is employed as a speech language pathologist in the their Early Childhood Intervention department. In addition, Lisa is program director for a non-profit autism awareness an acceptance organization called TEAM MARIO, where the organization as a whole has received local grants to fund programs and community events.
