VE-AAC-72: AAC and Transition: Life Starts at Twenty-one

Overview

The transitions to adulthood can be a time of peril. Teams do their best to consider transition goals in the IEP. However, not all issues receive focused attention. Some research shows that AAC users may only have 55% of the concepts needed in adulthood represented in their vocabulary set. We will cover topics such as vocabulary for sexuality and safety, vocabulary for reporting abuse, and data privacy and adult AAC users. This session will provide teachers, therapists, and caregiver some food for thought when it comes to considering the transition to adulthood.

Learning Objectives

  1. List three considerations impacting vocabulary selection for adults who use AAC.
  2. Discuss three critical elements to a successful transition.
  3. Describe a template transition plan for AAC Users in high school.
