Overview
This session presents an overview of current resources created and updated by the National Joint Committee on the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities (NJC) that offer content that can be used by families, advocates, faculty and practitioners from a range of disciplines and that focus on effective communication for persons with severe disabilities. Attendees will also learn how to become involved with the NJC Network.

First Learning Objective: List two content areas on the NJC site that provide current evidence supporting appropriate communication services for individuals with severe disabilities.

Biography
Amy S. Goldman, MS, CCC/L is President-elect for the United States Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (USSAAC), and represents USSAAC on the National Joint Committee for the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities (NJC). She is the co-coordinator for the AAC strand for the Assistive Technology Industry Association as well as its continuing education content consultant. Amy has specialized in AAC services, pre- and in-service training about AT and AAC, and has been a vigorous advocate for people with complex communication needs throughout her long career. A nationally and internationally known presenter, she recently retired from her work as technical assistance specialist with the national Assistive Technology Act Technical Assistance and Training Center (AT3).

Biography
Nicole is a speech language pathologist in private practice, with an emphasis on individuals who use AAC. She previously served on the Assistive Technology Team in Spring Branch ISD (Texas), and had worked as an SLP in the public schools since 1999. Nicole serves on ASHA Special Interest Group 12 (AAC) and is an ASHA representative to the National Joint Committee for the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities..

Biography
Judith Schoonover, MEd, OTR/L, ATP, FAOTA is an occupational therapist and former elementary school teacher. She is certified as an assistive technology professional (ATP) by RESNA and was a founding member of the Loudoun County Public Schools Assistive Technology Team. Judith has provided direct services in schools for more than 44 years and is a nationally and internationally recognized speaker presenting on the topics of school-based occupational therapy, transition, literacy, and assistive technology. She has authored numerous articles, and chapters in Early Childhood: Occupational Therapy Services for Children Birth to Five, Occupational Therapy for Children (6th-8th eds.), Best Practices in School Occupational Therapy, Assistive Technologies, and Occupational Therapy and Transitions: A Cross-System Perspective. She participated in National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE) workgroups addressing response to intervention (RTI), transition, and virtual schools. Currently, Judith represents AOTA on the National Joint Committee (NJC) for the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities and serves on the editorial board of the Assistive Technology Outcomes and Benefits (ATOB) Journal.
