VE-VHT-05: Michigan Assistive Technology Guidelines for Teachers of Students Blind or VI

Overview

The Michigan AT Guidelines are geared towards helping educators for the Blind and Visually Impaired assess, create electronic portfolios, and develop IEP goals and objectives with skills that lined up with ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education. These skills emphasize access specific for this population along with suggested teaching activities.

Content Disclosure: This session is focused on a project in Michigan into the Michigan Assistive Technology Guidelines for Teachers of Students Blind or VI. There will be limited or no information provided about similar projects or case studies.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe how three or more components of the Michigan AT Guidelines can assist educators with monitoring student technology skill development.
  2. Demonstrate using search filters to identify two or more Apps on the Assistive Apps page on the MDE-LIO website.
  3. Describe one or more ways how to fill out and use the Tool Record Keeping Chart as a technology inventory list for PreK – Grade 12 with one student’s toolkit information.

Biography

Ann McKay-Bacon, M.Ed., Teacher/Consultant for the Visually Impaired and Blind, the State of Michigan since 1976. Retired in 2019 from Macomb Intermediate School District in Macomb, Michigan. A technology team member with the Michigan Department of Education – Low Incidence Outreach agency for the past 20 years as a presenter, technology evaluator/instructor, and co-author of The Michigan Assistive Technology Guidelines and Assistive Apps list. Ann co-presented the Michigan Assistive Technology Guidelines for Teachers of Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired at the Michigan Association of Education and Rehabilitation (MAER) Conference in 2013 and 2016 and a two-day MDELIO “Live with LIO” Webinar in 2020. She was awarded The David & Joann Search Lifetime Achievement Award for a lifetime dedication to serving persons who are blind and visually impaired in Michigan, MAER Conference April 2019. Currently, co-owner of Information Plus Art, LLC, an educational and art consulting company.

Consulting fee from independent contractor service agreement work with the Michigan Department of Education - Low Incidence Outreach. I receive a consultant fee of $50.00 per hour for work provided as layout through my service agreement and a presenter's fee of $500.00 per full day's workshop. Currently, co-owner of Information Plus Art, LLC, an educational and art consulting company.

Julie Lutz

Biography

Julie A. Lutz, MAET, MATESOL, BA is a co-collaborator of the Michigan Assistive Technology Guidelines for Teachers of Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired. Julie has been a member of the Michigan Department of Education Low Incidence Outreach (MDELIO) Technology Team for ten years. Her 43 years of experience have been as a public-school educator in regular education classrooms and Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI) classrooms, teacher trainer, and consultant. As a member of the MDELIO team, she has co-presented the Michigan Assistive Technology Guidelines for Teachers of Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired at the Michigan Association of Education and Rehabilitation Conference in 2013 and 2016 and a two-day MDELIO “Live with LIO” Webinar in 2020. She is dedicated to the progress and success of teachers and students of the BVI community in the implementation of accessible twenty-first-century technology skills and tools.

Team Member of the Assistive Technology Team of the Michigan Department of Education Low Incidence Outreach (MDE-LIO). The Service Agreement states there is a $45 an hour payment to develop and revise curriculum and documents or provide instruction for students. In addition, there is payment to serve as a presenter and instructor for MDE-LIO technology workshops.
