Overview

Assistive technology (AT) has universal benefit to promote inclusion globally, affording opportunities for all to engage in meaningful and valuable activities and improve quality of life. With heightened awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, the impact of culture and social influences on promoting engagement and function need to be centered in all aspects of AT. This session will approach AT through the lens of diversity, inclusion, culture, and equity, challenging attendees to consider current policies and practices while also addressing challenges and exploring approaches to create change.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define four key terms for addressing diversity, inclusion, culture, and equity in assistive technology.
  2. Identify six key considerations for assistive technology policy and practice.
  3. Discuss one or more best practice approaches for addressing diversity, and equity in assistive technology policy and practice.

Biography

Dr. Douglene Jackson, PhD, OTR/L, LMT, ATP, BCTS is an occupational therapist with over 20 years of experience in the rehabilitation field, primarily with individuals with and without disabilities across the lifespan in schools, hospitals, clinics, and community-based settings. She holds a PhD in Special Education in Early Childhood, a Masters in Occupational Therapy, Bachelors in Rehabilitation Services with a concentration in counseling, Diploma in Massage Therapy, and various professional certifications, including assistive technology, telehealth, sensory integration, health and wellness, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Dr. Jackson works as an assessment consultant with WPS. She is CEO of GIFTS Institute, based in South Florida, where she leverages technology, training, and consultations to improve life for individuals and organizations internationally. Dr. Jackson is also a researcher and leader, holding positions and serving on boards of professional associations and community organizations. She is the recipient of the American Occupational Therapy Association’s (AOTA) 2022 Award of Merit, the highest in the profession, and the current AOTA Alternate Delegate to the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.
